Indonesia - Gili Islands Main Menu

After the five days on Gili Trawangan I decided to go back to Kuta in Bali (another tiresome day of travelling), Paul and Livia left on the previous day. I did meet up with them a couple of times and we did spend a whole night in the Sari Club in Kuta. Paul and Livia went to Lovina (north) on the friday (which I didnt know for sure at the time) and on the evening I went for drinks in the Sari Club and Paddys Bar on Kuta's main street (although it is the main street it is only wide enough for one vehicle and is one way).

Not the sort of email i enjoy writing, just to let you know im ok! but it was a close call!

It is like a war zone over here! the damage was incredible, the Sari Club, Paddy's bar and the surrounding area were completely leveled! (i had spent a few of my previous evenings there) last night decided to have an early night, was woken at 11, by huge bang (sounded like someone was in the attic of my bungalow, then shortly after another huge bang and the ceiling tiles all collapsed on me! I really thought there were people breaking in with sledge hammers or something. it wasn't til I looked outside and saw the glow and flames that I realised there was an explosion!

My bungalow was about 150 meters away from the back of the sari club, everything within 100 meters had huge damage!

The 2 dutch girls in the next bungalow and 3 finish lads were in a bar called Macaronis, a bit down from the Sari Club (they were just paying there bill and about to go to the club) they said it was unbeleiveable, I can't even repeat what they saw. We had to evacuate from the Sari Bali cottages and moved to another complex nearer the sea with a guy from UK because the flames were heading towards our rooms.

I've never felt so much panic, so much fear and also so much relief ever in my life! I'm not sure what to do now, I don't know if i should leave Bali and go somewhere else or what. I haven't managed to get through to the consulate to find out yet.

I'm ok, just a bit shook up. it is so sad, so many innocent people have died or got injured.

There is a British girl in our complex with huge burns down her back and her arm, she was in the club, she is one of the lucky ones.

The following day still in shock I walked up to the blast area and it was completely totalled, I still cant really describe it now. And there was even debris and damaged buildings about 500 meters away.

I decided to get out of Kuta and move up to Sanur on the East coast (along with an english couple who were also staying in Sari Bali Cottages). Sanur is a quiet, family resort and is getting quieter by the day. The beach isnt much to write home about as sea defenses are currently being constructed. But the pool and the gardens of the hotel im staying in are fantastic, and a great place to relax (even though the pool and the gardens belong to the hotel next door! noones kicked me out yet!).

Paul and Livia arrived in Sanur yesterday and are staying in the same hotel. It was good to see them. My girlfriend Jo arrives tomorrow which im definately looking forward to.

This is the final email of my travelling experiences...

Just to let you all know im safe and well and back in the UK.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my travelling experiences and hope you have enjoyed reading about them too! It's funny how a near death experience can make you rethink your priorities. I'm going to value everyday from now on! Oh well, back to single life (a long story!).

I will go to australia in the future, I guarantee that, get ready for more emails!

This site is dedicated to all those people who lost their lives in the Bali bombing.
