After
staying in Kuta for a few days we headed off to
the Gili Islands, which took a whole day via 2 mini
buses and 2 ferries. The ferry across to Lombok took 4
hours and was extremely hot and sunny. There were many
hawkers to greet us off the boat when we arrived all
trying to sell us things we didnt need, it was a vast
change from the friendliness of the Balinese people.

We then took a mini bus to the north of Lombok and had
to wait an hour for the Gili ferry (a small boat with
bamboo supports/floats on each side, should hold about
20 people) where we were yet again pounced on by more
hawkers who also wanted us to give them english coins,
hats, shoes, shirts infact anything they could see us
with! When realising we are english they all started
coming out with classic del boy quotes like 'lovely
jubbly' and 'water in majorca'?? and quoting football
players names 'micheal owen and david beckham' it was
quite amusing...

We finally got on the ferry... all 30 of us! and made
our way out in what seem quite choppy water. It wasnt
until we were at the second island that i started to
get worried as the waves were huge and crashing over
the side of boat (everyones backpacks were also
getting soaked!), but the last 100 meters was the
worst, the waves by this time were huge (i felt like
george clooney!) and just as we got to the shore we
saw lots of boats heading back out... another boat
that left at the same time as us had capsized and
there was a rescue mission going on (they were all
locals onboard and were all safely rescued).

The Gili Island of Trawangan is where we stayed for
five days and took about an hour and a half to walk
around.

It was surrounded by coral beaches (which are
actually quite uncomfortable compared to sand) and the
sea had the strongest undercurrent ive ever felt (not
safe for swimming, apparently due to the season).

I decided to spend my time diving and experienced some
of the best underwater marine life so far! I was
swimming with adult white tip reef sharks (danger
danger... not this time stevo) which are quite
harmless unless you had an open wound. I also saw some
turtles... lets get back to the sharks... they came
quite close and just seem to glide through the water
in convoy and then as quickly as they appeared, just
drifted into deep water and out of sight. I saw six
off them on that occassion. It was fantastic!
